Samuels Group | Environments was initially contacted by Ministry Saint Michael’s to research sleeper sofa options for their Women & Infant Center renovation. After learning more about the project, Kelly Sampson, an Environments business development manager specializing in healthcare interior furnishing solutions, had ideas that would help achieve the hospital’s goal of transforming this traditional OB unit into a functional spa-like environment. She extended an invitation to the unit manager and her head nurse to visit Nemschoff, a Herman Miller Healthcare company based in Wisconsin, to tour the manufacturing plant and showroom and see first-hand the many furniture options available to create their ideal Women and Infant Center. After the trip, Kelly worked with the unit staff to develop a wish list of new furniture and accessories, select fabrics and finishes, and develop a plan to blend this new furniture with some of the existing more permanent furnishings.

The team’s efforts contributed to a successful renovation project that included six surgical suites and converted nine family-sized LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum) birthing suites to a calming, feeling of home, spa-like atmosphere. Decorated in calming shades, the rooms feature a sleeper sofa, bassinet, glider recliner, dinette, armoire, flat screen TV, a case cart, and everything the staff needs for the baby’s birth. This new environment allows patients to labor, birth, recover, and rest in the same room for their entire stay. Expecting mothers are excited to deliver their babies in the renovated rooms and their excitement has trickled down to the staff of Ministry Saint Michael’s. They are proud of the new space and happy that they can offer such a unique environment to their patients.

“Kelly knows so much about interior furnishings for a hospital and was able to provide many options for us to consider in our renovation. She never swayed our vision, but provided just the right guidance to produce pleasing results. She was a very exciting and easy person to work with and actually became a friend throughout this process. Kelly was so dependable. It really felt like she was invested in our project. If there was an achievement, she celebrated with us; if there was a set-back she immediately took action to fix it.”
