The staff of the UWEC McIntyre Library contacted Environments in search of options to create a collaborative, flexible, and inviting space for their students on their second floor. This new space would be a test pilot of sorts for other learning areas within the library moving forward. Understanding the they many ways the rooms use could change in one day, along with a great deal of research & observation done by the library staff themselves, filling this space with furniture that is adaptable to the variety of students who would be using the space throughout each day was key. What the room starts off looking like in the morning is highly likely to have changed footprints 3, 4, or more times throughout the day; all depending on the student’s needs. The challenge and trend on college campuses today is to make designated areas capable of going from individual to collaborative to teaming environments throughout the day as needed.
According to Mr. Pollitz, “All of us here at McIntyre Library are dedicated to supporting the curriculum and educational mission of the University. Everything we do is designed to make the research and learning experience of students and faculty efficient and rewarding.”
That is just what our Environments Team was able to provide to the McIntyre Library. The students truly love the space and the fun of seeing how the various pieces change location and layout throughout the day has become very exciting for the staff, dictating much of their space utilization decisions and direction for the future of the library.
